- Ask for active state licensing and current liability insurance before work starts
- Ask for references from installations that are at least two years old, and go and look at them
- Confirm the crew will excavate 3 to 4 inches and install a compacted crushed-rock base — a 4-inch minimum if dogs use the yard
- Ask the base depth, the aggregate type by name, and whether both will be written into the contract
- Ask the compaction standard and how it is verified — the published target is 95% Standard Proctor in damp 2-inch lifts
- Ask where in the base the weed barrier goes, and expect the answer to be the bottom of the excavation
- Ask how the base is graded and where the 1 to 2 percent fall runs on your lot
- Ask how seams are joined and whether the perimeter is pinned and secured against the edging
- Ask what infill is specified and how many pounds per square foot are included
- Ask for the drainage plan for rain and for pet urine
- Get the material warranty and the workmanship warranty in writing, as two separate things
- Read the payment schedule: a deposit at contract is normal, payment in full before the base is built is not

The local detail — what the soil does, where water goes, which rules apply, and how hot a surface gets in the summer sun — belongs to the jurisdiction you are building in, which is why it is stated per market rather than borrowed from another one.
